The Allett Kensington 17B Petrol Cylinder Mower is designed for keen homeowners with a medium to large size lawn. One of the best features of the Allett Kensington is the cartridge feature that enables a range of different lawn care tasks to be carried out using just one machine. We’ll take a look at the various cartridges available a bit further down this post.
There’s nothing better than a cylinder mower to get that perfect bowling green striped finish to your lawn. Please be aware that not everyone’s lawn is suited to a cylinder mower. If your lawn is uneven, has children, animals and debris scattered over it, then you may be better off with a rear roller rotary mower. I’m not trying to put you off buying a cylinder mower, I just want you to be aware that cylinder mower works best on a prestige type lawn. Whereas a rotary mower can stand up to rough areas and hidden objects.

The Allett Kensington 17B Petrol Cylinder Mower
The Allett Kensington 17B is a well-engineered British machine guaranteed to give you a perfect cut. The cylinder mower is packed with features, making it probably the most universal cylinder mower available. The spring tine comb attachment (optional extra) is a useful feature to use before you cut your lawn. The springtine comb has the ability to lift the grass prior to cutting which then ensures an even cut.
Cutting Cylinder
A six-bladed 17-inch cutting cylinder which delivers 79 cuts per metre gives the Allett Kensington and amazing razor-sharp cut. Cylinder mowers have a very precise cutting action, almost like a scissor -type action. The top cylinder rotates against a lower fixed blade, the two edges meet and if set up correctly the cylinder will cut the blades of grass perfectly. It’s important to make sure your lawn is clear of any debris or stones as failure to do this will reduce the performance of your cylinder mower.
The cutting height can be adjusted from 1/4 to 1 1/4 inches (6 mm to 32 mm). The machine has variable micro-adjustment between each cutting height for optimum performance.
Steel Rollers
With two steel rollers, one roller at the front and one at the rear of the machine helps to give that classic British striped finish. The rear roller is split in two which helps to protect the turf when turning on damp grass.
Briggs & Stratton Engine
The Allett Kensington 17B Petrol Cylinder Mower is powered by an XR 550 Briggs & Stratton petrol engine. The 127cc overhead valve engine develops 4 hp. The XR 550 engine has a cast-iron sleeve that adds to the life of the engine. A dual-element air cleaner gives maximum protection to the engine. It’s important to make sure your air cleaner is kept clean at all times. Failure to do this will result in poor engine performance and shorter engine life. A few minutes servicing can save a lot of pain and expense in the long run and give your mower a much longer life.
The magnetron electronic ignition system ensures easy starting even on the coldest morning.
Cartridge Range
I believe that one of the best features of the Allett Kensington 17B Petrol Cylinder Mower is the fact that there are various attachments available. So in other words, one power source can operate many turf care accessories. These accessories or cartridges can be changed in a matter of seconds which makes the Allett range of mowers very unique.
The cartridge range includes; 10 bladed cutting cylinder, aerator, dethatcher, scarifier, verticut cartridge and lawn brush.
To Conclude
There’s nothing better than a cylinder mower to give you that perfect striped Bowling Green finish. As I mentioned earlier, just be aware that you need to have the right type of lawn that will benefit from a cylinder mower. If you’re not sure, it’s definitely worth taking a look at our range of rear roller rotary mowers. These mowers can stand up to more abuse than a cylinder mower and can give that classic striped finish. Obviously, the finish will not be quite so good as a cylinder mower, but in some cases, a rotary mower can be more practical. I’m not trying to put you off from purchasing a cylinder mower, I just want you to buy the right machine for the job.
The Allett Kensington 17B comes with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty for peace of mind.
