I’ve just been looking at the Stump Crusher 850 Pro by Dipperfox. I came across this machine by accident through communicating on LinkedIn, it’s amazing what you can find on LinkedIn! Apparently, the Stump Crusher 850 Pro By Dipperfox is made in Estonia, the first prototype model was built in 2018.
I really like the principle of this machine, it’s certainly a very different way of removing a tree stump. Traditionally, stump grinders have a cutting wheel that spins at high speed, with a number of teeth that chip away at the tree stump and grinds well below ground level, it’s a good way of removing tree stumps. The stump crusher 850 pro takes more of a drilling action rather than a cutting action, I like this principle, especially for clearance jobs. The downside is that the stump crusher 850 pro takes a lot of hydraulic power.
The manufacturer recommends a minimum of a 100 hp excavator, so you are talking about 20 ton plus machines, not something that can easily be used in the average garden! It would be great if Dipperfox could perhaps make a smaller machine that would fit on smaller excavators, maybe this is easier said than done due to the hydraulic oil flow required.

Simple Cutting Principle
The Stump Crusher 850 Pro By Dipperfox has more of a drilling principle rather than a high-speed traditional stump grinding cutter head. I like the idea of this principle as there is no flying debris, it’s much quicker than traditionally grinding a tree stump and the work rate is excellent. In a forest situation, the pieces of wood would quickly rot down, it may be slightly different in a residential area. Whether the slices of wood can be cut smaller by drilling a second hole, I would guess the remaining debris could be made smaller with a second pass of the stump crusher.
The two cutting blades look extremely heavy duty, it would be interesting to know how often the blades need changing. My guess would be that it would be fairly frequently considering the excellent work rate of the stump crusher. The auger type drill bit would also take a fair bit of wear and tear, I guess, I would really like to see one of these machines in action, maybe I will one day soon.

The Feider FNHPT240 Petrol Pressure Washer
I must admit that I haven’t owned a power washer for that long, it’s one of those products that I always wanted but never actually purchased. Since purchasing a power washer it’s been great for cleaning the patio and things around the garden and cars and machinery. Mulching
I’m a great fan of mulching as mulching is like using a natural green manure. Mulching makes a lawn stay greener for longer, especially in dry weather. Traditionally, a rotary mower is designed to throw the grass out of the cutting deck to make the most of engine power. However, with mulching, the mower is designed to keep the grass inside the cutting deck to cut the grass into multiple pieces, therefore creating a green manure.
Mulching is most effective and efficient when the grass is dry. Although you can still cut your lawn and mulch when it’s wet, it’s just that the results won’t be quite so good or efficient.
To mulching effectively your lawn needs to be mowed at least once a week, especially in the present year as we have had plenty of rain and the grass is growing extremely well! Today I was using a Howard Gem Rotavator (Dowdeswell 650) in preparation for creating a new lawn. This is one of the later Howard Gems as they were taken over by Dowdeswell in the ’80s, hence the Dowdeswell logo on the rotavator.
The Dowdeswell 650 is a great machine for reclaiming ground, creating lawns and general rotavating in the garden, nursery or allotment. Over the years I have owned seven different Dowdeswell and Howard Gem rotavators. Unfortunately, the Dowdeswell Rotavators are no longer made and are getting fewer and fewer every year. I believe production stopped in the late 80s or early 90s.
My preferred model is the 30-inch model which comes complete with dual wheels which make it much lighter on the freshly tilled ground. The 30-inch models seem very rare, I don’t believe there were many produced, I have owned one 30 inch model.
I believe the most popular model is the 20-inch model due to its ability to be able to get into most places. The model in the video is a Dowdeswell 650 24 inch powered by a 10 hp single cylinder Acme diesel engine. The most popular diesel engine model is the German Hatz diesel engine, a great engine that has lowdown torque. Other diesel engines have been fitted including Ruggerini, Sachs and probably more!

The Mountfield HP41 petrol rotary lawnmower is a budget petrol push mower that really does offer excellent value for money. Mountfield also offers the SP41 petrol rotary lawnmower which is on special offer at £199. This has the added advantage of being self-propelled so there is no need to push this machine. It’s definitely worth taking a look at for the small extra cost.
The 15-inch wide deck is not massive, but it does enable you to go where other mowers cannot go. The mower is suitable for areas up to 600 m². I know of people who use a small petrol mower like the Mountfield to cut around obstacles and to get into awkward places. And then use a larger mower to cut the main lawn, which can be another excellent use for this machine.

The majority of ride-on mowers are fitted with hydrostatic transmission today. There are a few budget machines that still have the old fashioned gearbox system, however, I wouldn’t recommend buying a ride-on mower with a gearbox transmission. The extra cost for a hydrostatic drive is worth every penny.
Hydrostatic drives work in a very simple way. There is a hydraulic pump which is driven by the petrol engine, which in turn powers a hydraulic motor that powers the wheels of the ride-on mower. The hydrostatic drive gives instant forward and reverse speeds, there is no gearbox and no clutch. The majority of machines just have one foot pedal which gives you the ability to go forward or backwards at variable speeds. My estimation from my experience is that it almost cuts mowing time down by one third.

Cutting Deck
The 66 cm (27 inches) cutting deck makes the Mountfield 827H Compact Ride On Mower highly manoeuvrable, going places were most ride-on mowers cannot go. The cutting height varies from 30 to 80 mm which gives a wide range of cutting heights for every condition. There are six different cutting height positions.
There is an optional mulching kit for the Mountfield compact ride on mower, however, personally, I would not recommend a mulching kit for a machine of this power. Mulching takes a considerable amount of power as mulching keeps the grass within the cutting deck and chops the grass into small pieces. This takes a considerable amount of power and I don’t believe that a 4.8 hp engine can really cope with this type of task.
Grass Collector
The Mountfield compact ride on mower has a large 150 L collector that can be emptied from the driver’s seat. This is a good feature as I see too many ride-on mowers where you have to manually remove two or three collection bags by hand. This defeats the object of having a sit on mower! It’s surprising how much time you can save by staying on the mower, emptying a grass box from the driver’s seat saves time and effort, a good plus point for the Mountfield compact ride on mower.
