As I mentioned at the start of this post, I’m not a great fan of electric powered mowers. This is mainly due to the trailing cable and the fact of having to be near a power supply.

Battery technology has come a long way over the past few years, with batteries becoming more powerful and longer-lasting.

When purchasing a battery lawnmower, I would make sure and check out the recommended lawn size. With a petrol lawnmower, it doesn’t particularly matter about the lawn size as we can just add petrol. Also, remember that if your lawn has become long, it will require more battery power which will reduce the runtime.

As you might know, I always like to try and make life in the garden as easy as possible. A garden tiller is a machine that can help you do this in an efficient way.

Most people think of a tiller as a machine that is used to dig the garden. This is obviously something that a tiller can do, however, I prefer to dig a vegetable patch by hand if I can. I appreciate that this isn’t always possible depending on the size of the garden.

Digging Rotors

As you know, I am always looking for ways to make life easier in the garden. The Fieder RTF220 pro rear tine tiller does exactly that!

There are two types of rotavator, the cheaper type that are most common, these are the rotor driven type. These types of rotavators or cultivators as they are sometimes known are driven by their tines rather than the wheels. They will do the job, however, wheel-driven rotavator’s are my preferred choice and easier to use.

The Fieder RTF220 pro rear tine tiller is a wheel driven rotavator that gives complete control to the operator. Rather than the tines driving the machine, the wheels drive the tiller. Therefore, making it much easier to control and less fatigue on the operator.

Gearbox

Stiga SBP 375 Backpack Blower

As I have mentioned in previous blog posts, the leaf blower is the machine that I use most in the garden. We often refer to garden blowers as leaf blowers, however, they are capable of many more tasks. I use my knapsack leaf blower for leaf blowing, clearing up after a days work in the garden, blowing patios and driveways and more. I’ve even scarified a lawn and then used the blower to blow the material into heaps ready for clearing up. They really are a universal machine and literally save me hours of work every week. I hardly use a rake or broom as the leaf blower can do so much more.

Although the handheld blowers are very compact and really useful for swinging around and getting into awkward places. In general, the average backpack blower has much more power. With a 75.6cc engine that develops 4.2 hp the Stiga SBP 375 backpack blower has plenty of power to move the wettest of leaves. The engine has a traditional recoil start system and is fitted with an automatic choke and fuel primer for easy starting.

The air filter is placed at the top of the machine for easy maintenance. It’s important that you keep the air filter clean for prolonged life and efficient running. However, with the backpack blower being on your back it keeps out the way from the majority of the debris.

The 2.1 L fuel tank gives plenty of fuel for minimum stoppages. Although I don’t own this machine, basing it on the Stihl blower that I use, my guess is that you would get a good one hours use out of the machine before refuelling.

Antivibration System

It’s important that a backpack blower has a good antivibration system, especially if it is going to be used for prolonged periods. I’ve mentioned in previous posts that the more basic and budget type blowers do not have the best antivibration systems in place. The petrol leaf blower is a very versatile tool, in fact, it is the machine that I use most in the garden all year round! Although we often think of a leaf blower for just blowing leaves, leaf blowers are great for clearing up in the garden after a days work. The variable lockable speed control is useful for controlling the leaf blower. There are times when you don’t need to use the leaf blower at full power, for example, when working in corners and gathering leaves into a heap.

Antivibration System

Something to be aware of on the cheaper leaf blower models is the antivibration system. When you’re using two-stroke engines for long periods the vibration can become unpleasant. Professional models of blower have a good antivibration system. However, some of the cheaper models rely more on the padded backpack harness to remove the vibration from the operator. This does help, however, if you’re looking to use the machine for long periods you may need to look for something with a better antivibration system.

Today we are looking at the Oleo-Mac BV270 pro leaf blower, this is allegedly a commercial grade leaf blower at a domestic price. However, take care as the reviews are not brilliant for this blower, I will explain more later in this post.

The Oleo-Mac BV270 Pro Leaf Blower

Oleo-Mac was founded in northern Italy in 1972. The company has grown considerably over the years producing many different machines for the garden.

As I have mentioned in previous posts the petrol leaf blower is the machine that I use most in the garden. Obviously, its primary job this time of year is for leaf blowing, however, a leaf blower can be used for many other tasks in the garden. For example, blowing paths and driveways, tidying up after working in the garden, I have even used a leaf blower to clear the lawn after scarifying! Another excellent task for a petrol leaf blower is for blowing down machinery, I prefer using a leaf blower for this task, rather than power washing.

Although more often than not I use a knapsack style leaf blower, I really like the flexibility and compactness of the petrol handheld leaf blowers.

Engine

The Oleo-Mac BV270 pro leaf blower is powered by a two-stroke 30.5 cc engine that develops 1.2 hp. The air jet produces 234 km/hour of air. The engine is quiet enough to use in residential areas. Starting is with the traditional recoil start. The manufacturer claims that the machine has a 10 times longer working life and the cheaper domestic models.

Mulching And Vacuuming

I’m not a great fan of mulching and vacuuming with the petrol handheld leaf blowers as the process is quite slow. It is okay to add those finishing touches, however, in general, I find it much easier to use a leaf blower as a blower rather than a vacuum and mulcher. If you are looking to carry out lots of garden vacuuming, it’s worth taking a look at our range of wheeled garden vacuum cleaners. These are powerful vacuums that are specially designed for the job.

The Oleo-Mac BV270 pro leaf blower has a four-bladed steel impeller attached to a fan which helps to mulch the debris. It also means that the 36 L bag needs less emptying and is better for composting.

To Conclude

Unfortunately, some of the reviews for the Oleo-Mac BV270 pro leaf blower are not brilliant. The fact that the company offers a three years warranty, although there are terms and conditions, I would have expected better reviews.

Personally, I would go for the Stihl SH 86-CE vacuum shredder if you’re looking for a vacuum facility. Or the cheaper Stihl BG 86 C-E handheld petrol leaf blower which is just a stand-alone handheld petrol leaf blower.

The Racing 26PBL Handheld Petrol Blower–Vac

The Racing 26PBL handheld petrol blower–vac is a budget vac that is suitable for medium-sized gardens. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, the garden blower is the machine that I use most in the garden. Obviously, this time of year I use a petrol garden blower more due to the number of leaves coming down. However, I also find a garden blower an excellent tool for tidying up after a days work in the garden. Although for most of my work I use a knapsack blower, I really like the versatility of the handheld petrol blowers.

Engine

With a 26cc two-stroke petrol engine with a recoil start, the Racing handheld blower is a very versatile machine. No trailing power cables, no batteries to charge, just a two-stroke petrol mix which can be used anywhere.

Mulching Fan

The two-stroke engine has a fan attached to it which in turn produces blowing power of up to 152 mph. The fan also acts as a mulching feature that can mulch garden waste into small pieces which enables the 35 L bag to be emptied less often.

Collection Bag

With a 35 L collection bag, the Racing 26PBL handheld petrol blower–vac has an excellent capacity for vacuuming. However, in my experience blower vacs are much more efficient at blowing leaves and debris than they are collecting debris and mulching. I prefer and find it much quicker to blow leaves and debris into a corner and then collect in a wheelbarrow or something similar. The only time I really use the collection bag is if I want to add some final touches to a patio or somewhere similar.

The Racing 26PBL handheld petrol blower–vac is a remarkably lightweight blower, especially for the price. Often cheaper garden blowers are heavier than the more expensive lightweight semi-commercial blowers. It’s a well-balanced machine that is fitted with an anti-vibration system to minimise operator fatigue.

The petrol blower vac also features variable speed control. This is a useful feature when you’re trying to blow leaves into a heap or out of a corner.

To Conclude

It never fails to amaze me how some manufacturers can make machines so cheaply. I always advise customers to purchase the best machine they can afford. As in the long run, I believe it works out cheaper to buy a more expensive machine that will give many years of service. The final question is; would I buy? Yes, if I wasn’t using the machine commercially as it does offer value for money. However, if money was no object, I would probably buy the Stihl BG 86 handheld petrol blower. This is a machine I have owned in the past, there have literally been thousands built, it will give many years of service. It’s a machine that many professionals choose to buy.
